By Matthew Mayfield
The chorus of this tune is more of a desperation prayer than anything else. “Please...I need a hand, I’m stuck in the recklessness where all of this began.” When the melody first arrived for this one, I wasn’t quite sure where to go lyrically. I kept seeing an image of a sunken ship at the bottom of the ocean - mangled and destroyed by a severe storm. Sometimes when those swells come at us, they leave pieces of the wreckage behind as reminders. At times I feel like there’s no more room left on the inside for storing it all. But without fail, I always manage to cram into whatever compartment is left and allow it to find its place until it’s time to release and cut ties. There’s a certain triumphant feeling in the music that rubs against the semi-defeated lyric nicely. But in the end, the boat must be broken before it can be pieced back together and emerge from those depths as a stronger, steadier ship.
