This song is the centerpiece of RECOIL. It was the first one I wrote for the record. It’s a song about betrayal, but from both sides. We’ve all done some betraying and we’ve all been betrayed. I wanted to paint that simple picture and capture the essence of those feelings on tape. It’s a deeply personal song for me, so it arrived without me having to do anything other than grab ahold of it. I remember waking up from a nightmare back in December of 2015 and staring at the hotel pen/pad next to the bed. All I wrote was “this bed is a cage” over and over again. The next morning on the plane, I filled in the last line “and now I have to lie in the one that you’ve made.” For me, that’s the most powerful lyric on the entire record. I try to dump my entire heart and soul into every note and every melody I put my stamp on. This song is one of my proudest moments as an artist.
