My Next Two E.P.’s

So I’ve got this idea that I wanna share with you guys.  I wanna give everyone the chance to get more involved in the next couple of records and bring y’all a little closer than social media will allow.  Basically, YOU are the record company.  You pledge whatever amount you want to ($12 minimum) and we make the next few records together as a team.  There’s all kinds of exclusive content, music, video and little artifacts from the studio, plus some tangible pieces of the creative process available to make it all a bit more intimate than the standard ‘here’s my record…end of story’.  Check out Pledge Page here: http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/matthewmayfield or just click on the badge below

You won’t be subscribing to a service, you’ll be joining my team.  I know that may sound a bit NASCAR, but I assure you there will be no corporate logos painted across my guitars. Just a simple bridge built between fans and the artist.

Take a look.  I think it’s a cool way to keep real music alive in the new world.

Cheers,
MM

Man-Made Machines

This time around, I wanted to shift gears a bit and try some new things. We spent lots of time dialing in interesting tones and noises to make the songs feel like they sound. We tried all kinds of strange stuff–violin bow on guitar, white noises, programming bizarre keyboard patches and making them move in tempo with the song–all to get each song where it needed to be sonically and to have some fun experimenting in the studio. I hope it takes you somewhere.

‘Man-Made Machines’ is about the lengths we’ll go to keep our true selves out and our fake selves in.
‘Safe & Sound’ is a real lullabye that I used to sing years ago. I added verses and a chorus.
‘A Cycle’ is an old song that I used to play with some good friends. I love that song.
‘Who Am I?’ explores the age-old idea that ‘God is on our side’.
Golden Opportunity’ is a song about missed chances and ignoring the lessons I should be learning in my head. Writing the song helped me truly learn them in my heart.

All songs written by Matthew Mayfield (Matthew Mayfield Music/BMI)
Recorded at Mason Music Studios, Birmingham, AL (www.masonmusicstudios.com)
*’Safe & Sound’ recorded and mixed by Jon Black (www.whoisjonblack.com)
Produced by Matthew Mayfield
Mixed by Matthew Mayfield and Will Mason

MM: vocals, guitars, bass, noise
Will Mason: guitars, keyboards
Wil Drake: drums
Jon Black: keys on ‘Safe & Sound’

‘I Don’t Know You At All’ (Demo)

Sometimes you realize that the person you once shared the most intimate connection with is a total stranger. Sometimes it stings. Sometimes it’s a relief.

Here’s to dodging a bullet.

Thanks to Chris Weninegar for helping me catch all of these thoughts and put them in a jar. One mic, one take.

Guess the writing’s on the wall.
